Avatar: The Last Airbender Challenge
Day 8: Favorite Quote
Here is the full scene from the season finale part 1, because it truly is one of the most powerful moments in Avatar in my opinion:
Zuko: Well that sweet and innocent kid grew up to be a monster, and the worst father in the history of fathers.
Aang: But he’s still a human being.
Zuko: You’re going to defend him?
Aang: No, I agree with you. Firelord Ozai is a horrible person. And the world will probably be better off with out him. But there’s gotta be another way.
Zuko: Like what?
Aang: I don’t know. Maybe we can make some big pots of glue and then we can use glue to stick his arms and legs together so he can’t bend anymore!
Zuko: Yeah and then you can show him all his baby pictures and all those happy memories would make him good again!
Aang: Do you really think that would work?
Aang: This goes against everything I learn from the monks. I can’t just go around wiping people out that I don’t like.
Sokka: Sure you can! You’re the avatar! If it’s in the name of keeping balance, I’m pretty sure the universe will forgive you!
Aang: This isn’t a joke Sokka! None of you understand the position I’m in!
Katara: Aang! We do understand, it’s just-
Aang: Just what, Katara? What?
Katara: We’re just trying to help!
Aang: Then when you figure out a way for me to beat the Firelord with out taking his life, I’d love to hear it!
I actually wrote an essay about this scene in my Religion in Pop Culture class in College. This was such a powerful scene because you realize that with all the teachings Aang went through, you finally understood that murder was not an option.
This scene was incredible. I don’t really know how I can explain it any other way. This decision that Aang needed to make was terrifying. How could he murder someone? Sure, he’s the Avatar, but there had to be another way. He just couldn’t side with Justice being done by taking someone’s life.
I was in shock this whole scene when it aired. The tension was perfect, but scary at the same time.
After the scene, you then remember that this is a kid’s show. Sure, the creators knew that its extremely popular with teens and adults, but this scene really made you question how they were going to defeat Ozai.
So that’s my favorite quote.
